Pastor's Penpoint - "Obvious Love" - February 2016

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)

One of the TV commercials I shake my head at stars Captain Obvious, speaking on behalf of a Hotel website. It's hard to imagine who would develop a character that says everything that is obvious - much to the eye rolling and frustration of those to whom he is speaking. That being said, I feel compelled to remind you that February is a month for love ... specifically Valentine's Day.

While obvious, it is interesting and I would say fitting, that the season of Lent begins on Valentine's Day, Sunday, February 14th. While many celebrate the 14th as being a time to honor and bestow love and gifts on our sweeties, it seems so perfect that this year, we can consider the greatest love story ever known to man.

Since it would be too obvious (and I wouldn't want your eyes to get stuck by rolling them around too much) I won't retell that great story of ultimate love and sacrifice by our Lord, Jesus Christ. I will instead ask us all to accept the challenge in how we can honor that love through our self-reflection starting on February 14th.

We do not need to guilt ourselves or take a martyr's position as we reflect on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. We should however, take a long hard look at how His life has impacted our lives - and our future. How can we honor His love? By renewing our strength found in his sacrifice; spending time in God's Word, prayerfully petitioning for clarity in thought and action and showing that same love to those who so desperately need it.

This Lenten season, let's show our love to and honor the ultimate love of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

In His name, ~Pastor Todd
